ASC

The Area Service Committee has been created and exists to help groups achieve their primary purpose of carrying the message to the addict who still suffers. It is to be supportive of its groups and their primary purpose by providing a forum for them within the area to help with their unique situations and needs. The ASC provides services which NA groups cannot or ought not perform themselves. It is ultimately responsible to the groups it serves.

The ASC consists of three groups of participants.

Group Service Representatives and their alternates carry the wishes of there respective groups to the committee meetings and in turn bring back to the groups information about happenings in NA as a whole.

The administrative officers bear the responsibility of administering the affairs of the entire ASC. These officers are the Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary, two Regional Committee Members and a Web Servant.

The subcommittees carry on the actual work of delivering its direct services as delegated to them by the ASC. These services include but are not limited to public information, meeting schedules, fellowship activities and carrying the message to addicts in jails and institutions.

Typically the ASC meets on the third Sunday of each month, but sometimes is moved to facilitate holidays and conflicting fellowship events. A current schedule can be found on the service committee schedule page.

Subcommittees

Activities

Dances, picnics, and special events all help to bring the fellowship together in celebration and to provide a greater sense of community. This subcommittee is the workhorse that makes these activities possible. Though it is not the primary goal, sometimes these functions bring in additional area income.

Hospitals & Institutions

The Hospitals & Institutions Subcommittee conduct panels that carry the NA message to addicts who often have no other way of hearing our message. These panels, unlike a regular recovery meeting, are structured and presented by trained volunteers. We take these presentations into jails, prisons and treatment centers. H&I is often the first exposure many addicts have of Narcotics Anonymous.

Literature

CBANA keeps a stock of NA books, pamphlets and keytags that can be purchased by local groups. The Literature Subcommittee is entrusted to monitor and maintain stock levels. They also coordinate the distribution of the literature.

Outreach

The Outreach Subcommittee serves as an outstretched hand from our established NA community in Corpus Christi to isolated groups in South Texas. By phone, by mail, and by car we make sure that no group and no addict has to go through it alone if at all possible. The subcommittee makes regular road trips to isolated groups to help them keep in touch with the mainstream of the Narcotics Anonymous fellowship.

Public Information

The general mission of the CBANA Public Information Subcommittee is to inform addicts and others in the community of the availability of recovery in Narcotics Anonymous. There are many ways in which these efforts are promoted which include mail outs to professionals, public service announcements, attendance at health fairs and responses to media inquires. Our Traditions state that our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, and films. This subcommittee must take great care in following this tradition.

PI is also responsible for maintaining the phoneline. When an addict calls our helpline seeking help the person answering the phone is an addict in recovery. This subcommittee maintains a team of trained volunteers who help addicts and others in the community find us easily and quickly. Often times the phoneline volunteer is the first person in recovery that a newcomer speaks with.

Recovery by the Sea

Each summer CBANA conducts a beach campout on North Padre Island. This event, Recovery by the Sea, has in 22 years grown to over 300 recovering addicts in attendance. The RBS Subcommittee manages every aspect of this production.
